1st HIPON International Conference & Workshop
"IMPROVING PATHOLOGY TEACHING"
In the immense field of modern pathology, an extensive amount of data is available, and more than ever, practical skills are requested to be developed by medical students, researchers and professionals. The conversion of the extensive amount of available data into medical experience represents one of the most important tasks in medical education; this challenging prospect motivated us of building a new multi language e-learning platform to be used as a valuable teaching instrument aiming to capture professional experience in pathology, bridging the worlds of education and work. The relevant project under the full title “E-modules on HistoPathology: a valuable online tool for students, researchers and professionals-HIPON” has been supported and co-financed by the Lifelong Learning Program of the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA), The Commission of the European Union. HIPON is being coordinated by Associate Professor Dr Andreas C. Lazaris, Pathologist at the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with the participation of the following basic partners:
- University of Zagreb School of Medicine, Croatia,
- Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Centre, the Netherlands,
- Centre for the Advancement of Research & Development in Educational Technology (CARDET), Cyprus, and
- Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, FYROM.
HIPON was launched at the beginning of 2013 and has reached its final year of materialization. The midterm report of HIPON has been favorably evaluated by the EACEA experts who appreciated the potential of our teaching tool in providing the opportunity and the means to acquire medical experience.
Today’s global educational environment is indeed rapidly changing. Our perspective with regard to the future of medical education is experiential learning. Learning authentically implies that learners, simulating their present or future professional practice, gain medical experience in the process of diagnosing human diseases. This challenge is linked with our main educational task undertaken, i.e., the structuring of HIPON inter-active e-learning platform in the context of our novel teaching strategy. HIPON’s purpose is not to provide just another pathology website atlas, but to convey professional experience and promote the correct way to diagnostic thinking in Pathology. The project has resulted in an autonomous well-structured and user-friendly, e-learning platform, specifically focused on histopathology. Through the use of virtual slides, educative videos and microscopic, high resolution, marked images accompanied by relevant questions and answers, HIPON online platform aims to make end-users able to think as experienced pathologists and become highly efficient in correlating pathologic data with other clinical-laboratory information.
It is a great pleasure for HIPON Consortium to invite you to attend the International Conference and ICT workshop entitled “IMPROVING PATHOLOGY TEACHING” which is to take place at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, on October 22nd and 23rd 2015. The participation of distinguished Professors and doctors of pathology from abroad and Greece allowed us to work out this program. The attending medical students, pathology residents and medicine teaching staff will have the chance to update to innovative Pathology teaching methods, to try them out and critically discuss them.
Looking forward to meeting you at a meaningful conference and wishing you an enjoyable stay in Athens.
